Wet Wings is a Wellington-based alt-indie duo comprised of Darian Woods (formerly of Black Market Art) and Lucy Botting. It's surprising they have remained largely unheard of until the release of Glory Glory - their debut album - considering the pair have been working together since 2009. The band also possesses a very distinctive, varied and intricate sound, so it's a treat that they're starting to come to our wider attention.
Glory Glory is primarily a folk-pop album making welcome use of soft synth effects and digital drums to generate pieces that can be simple and charming, simultaneously to being more progressive and maybe even a little bit sinister. The album opens with lead single Feeeel It, which sets a clear precedent. At first, the song begins with almost nursery rhyme-like lyrics ('I heard a whisper from a ghost / Who told me who you loved the most') and melodies, only to be taken away on a different pace and instilled with a much different atmosphere with the entry of a 'drum machine' at the top of the mix. This characterises a lot of the material on the album.
However, plenty more aural surprises await the listener here and there. Witching Hour and Last Day Of Summer are both adorned by a change to acoustic drums, thanks to sessionist Matthew Scobie. The brief-but-beautiful instrumental interlude of Crowne Plaza will captivate you with Michael Woods' fine flute and Robin Woods' clarinet. Closing track Grace also includes quite a bit of flute play throughout its steady and contemplative six minutes.
Superb multi-part harmonies are quite prevalent throughout Glory Glory. Initially they are somewhat reminiscent of the likes of early Gladeyes - but each song tends to swell from humble beginnings into either a joyful or introspective section, usually including some instrumental diversification as well. We've Lost Her and A Terrible Thing make for an incredibly sparse, haunting environment which can even lead the listener themself to feel fragile.
Glory Glory never gives the impression of having an intense layering of sound. As a result we're left with the appropriate room to think and enjoy. Solely our minds can get into it, rather than our bodies as well. Most of all, Darian and Lucy's elegant soft folk-pop vocals are allowed to stay up in the mix and keep us company. Glory Glory is certainly a fitting summer album.
